Clinical Medical Assistant

This program prepares learners to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical aspects of a medical office. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, pharmacology, taking and documenting vital signs, technical aspects of phlebotomy, the 12-lead EKG and the cardiac life cycle. The purpose of the Clinical Medical Assisting program is to prepare learners to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical aspects of a medical office.

Phlebotomy Technician
(In-Person through CCI)

 

 

This program prepares learners to collect blood specimens from clients for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Learners will become familiar with all aspects of blood collection and will review the skills needed to perform venipunctures safely. Topics in this course include medical terminology, related anatomy and physiology, blood collection procedures, and procedures for collection of other types of specimens within the scope of practice of the phlebotomist.

Medical Billing and Coding

Medical Billing and Coding Program Instructor led at a distance
This combined 80 hour billing and coding course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, how to manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-10 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures.  The course covers the following areas: CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation and Management), specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology and laboratory), ICD-10 (Introduction and Guidelines) and basic claims processes for medical insurance and third party reimbursements.  Students will learn how to find the service and codes using manuals, (CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS).  

National Certification:  After obtaining the practical work experience (6months to 2 years), students who complete this course could be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) - Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC) or Certified Outpatient Coder Exam (COC); the American Health Information Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam; and/or other National Certification Exams

NWCA National Certification:  This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Workforce Career Association (NWCA) Medical Billing & Coding Specialist (MBCS) Exam

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

 

This program will provide you with the overall roles and responsibilities of an EMT.
Some of the topics covered:
• Medical, legal, and ethical communication
• CPR
• Lifting and moving
• Patient assessment
• Providing emergency care
• Vehicle extrication
• Incident management
• Hazmat awareness
• Scene assessment and transport of patients

The program is offered in a hybrid format of classroom-based and online instruction. The course includes a Pennsylvania State practical skills evaluation and written examination, which, if passed, will provide a PA state certification as an EMT. 90 contact hours

Instructors/course mentors are actively involved in your learning experience, responsding to any questions or concerns, as well as encouraging and motivating you to succeed. Financial Aid
Financial Aid is available through the SallieMae Smart Option Student Loan program.  Visit the SallieMae website and search for Commonwealth University of PA Workforce Development. Our School ID is 003315-97.

We do not offer payment plans directly through Commonwealth University.  However, some of our vendors offer payment plans that you might be able to utilize.  

Please contact your local PA CareerLink to inquire about WIOA, TAA or OVR funding availability for workforce development training programs.

Refund Policy
Tuition and fees are refundable up to five days prior to the class start date.  Tuition and fees are non-refundable after the class start date.

Act 48
Commonwealth University is an approved provider for Act 48 hours.  We are currently offering online courses through our third-party collaborations. Pre-approved Act 48 courses can be found under the Ed2Go category of Teacher Professional Development.

In order to receive Act 48 hours for any a non-credit course or to check if your course qualifies for Act 48, please contact tallen@lockhaven.edu before registering.
