Requirements, Forms, and Information for Teacher Education Students

Candidacy is the official acceptance of students into a teacher certification program, thus allowing the candidate to take selected advanced courses in his/her major leading to teacher certification.
The below requirements must be completed when applying for candidacy:
Candidacy Requirements
- Earned 45 credit hours
- Earned a 3.0 GPA
- Completion of Freshmen Education Seminar course
- 6 credits of general education Math (Math101 or higher) with a C- or better (some programs require a C or better)
- 3 credits of Composition with a C- or better (some programs require a C or better)
- 3 credits English Literature with a C- or better (some programs require a C or better)
- Clearances: Act 151 (Child Abuse), 34 Criminal Background, copy of Negative TB and ACT 114 (FBI, PA Department of Education accepted)
- Mandated Reporter Training Certificate
- Stage I Disposition
- Freshman Profile Diversity Plan with essay
- *Passed Basic Skills Tests (Reading, Writing and Math) or Exempt SAT or ACT scores.* Act 55 of 2022 signed into law by Governor Wolf on July 8, 2022, requires the Secretary of Education to waive the requirement to satisfactory complete the assessment of Basic Skills Tests requirement for 3 years from July 8, 2022 through July 8, 2025.

Teacher Education candidates, who plan to register for fall 2023 Professional Semester
(Block) Secondary Education (Block II) must present their Developing Portfolio to
their program coordinator in spring 2023.
Professional Semester Application for Fall 2023 (Block) Secondary Education (Block

Teacher Education Candidates must have a 3.0 GPA overall and all Developing Portfolio
requirements met in order to be eligible for the professional semester. Professional
Semester applicants must have current clearances and negative TB Test. In addition,
must submit evidence of liability insurance (also required for student teaching).
