Current Students

Certification: Completion of the BSEd in Secondary Education – Earth and Space Science degree at LHU leads to your positive recommendation to the Pennsylvania Department of Education when you apply for certification. The Level I certificate qualifies you to teach Earth and Space Science at the high school and middle school level.

Accreditation: Accredited by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE), the Council for Accreditation of Education Providers (CAEP), in part through the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA).

Blocked Classes: The Secondary Education programs at LHU offer two “blocked” groupings of courses in the method and practice of teaching. One of them is typically scheduled in the sophomore year and the other in the senior year. Each block includes a subject-specific “methods” course where prospective teachers learn about curriculum, assessment, and technology in addition to methods for teaching in the various content areas.

Student Teaching: LHU’s education curriculum will give you the opportunity to student teach at two different sites. You will likely have a choice of urban, rural, or suburban schools. You may student teach abroad at any of our partner universities.

Careers: As a graduate of LHU’s secondary education program, you will be prepared to teach Earth and Space Science in middle, junior, and senior high schools in grades 7-12. Demand for secondary education teachers with a dual degree in special education remains strong throughout the country, particularly in rural and inner city districts.

From 2014 to 2024, a significant number of older teachers will reach retirement age. Their retirement will create job openings for new teachers. Many schools report that they have difficulty filling teaching positions for certain subjects, including math, science (especially chemistry and physics), English as a second language, and special education.
Facilities: Faculty deliver courses in technology-enhanced classrooms with vast multimedia capabilities. Students can access open computer labs and campus wireless network when using personally-owned devices. Students can request technology resources from Stevenson Library, Media Services.
