Assistant Directors

Assistant Directors, more commonly known as Residence Hall Directors (RHD), supervise the residence halls. Trained in counseling or student personnel, these professional staff members live in their respective residential communities helping students with personal, social, and academic concerns. Assistant Directors also manage the operations of the residence halls, supervise Resident Assistants and other student staff, advise Hall Council, and act as judicial hearing officers.

Resident Assistants

The Resident Assistant (RA) position is one of the most important, influential, and rewarding leadership opportunities available to LHU students. RAs are upper-class students trained as peer advisers  who live and work in their assigned residence halls.  Available to assist you with your personal, interpersonal, and academic needs, RAs foster a sense of belonging and help residents build an inclusive, positive community. RAs also help maintain a secure environment by upholding residence hall policies and the student code of conduct. Most importantly, RAs genuinely care about their residents and have the desire to help students succeed. Please feel free to consult your RA about any concerns or problems.

 Residence Hall Desk Receptionists

Desk receptionists are part-time student staff members vital to efficient and effective functioning of the residence halls. They provide excellent customer service at the residence hall front desks by answering questions from students and visitors, signing visitors into the residence halls, checking out recreational equipment, and other duties as assigned. Desk receptionists also play an important role in providing safety and security for students living in the residence halls. 

 Summer Positions

Summer Staff Assistants work during the summer in a variety of roles including: as a Resident Assistant for the summer resident population; as a summer orientation staff member; and as an office assistant as well as assisting with the Haven Cupboard and the housing of Camps and Conferences. 

Orientation Staff work with new students during summer orientation helping them acclimate to the University and university life as well as prepare for the start of their college journey.

  • Summer Student Assistant (time commitment is all summer; stipend and housing provided)
  • Summer Orientation Leader (time commitment is one training week and 6-8 orientation days; a stipend and housing for the work period provided)

Resident Assistant Eligibility

Resident Assistants are employees of Student and Residence Life reporting directly to the Assistant Directors and, ultimately, to the Dean of Student and Residence Life. The minimum qualifications to apply for the RA position, participate in the selection process, and be hired for a Fall 2021 RA position are:

  • Fill out an application form by 12:00 p.m. on March 19, 2021.
  • Have two recommendations completed and returned to 219 Ulmer Hall by March 19, 2021. Click here to download the personal reference form.
  • Have at least a 2.300 cumulative, overall GPA at the time of application (do not round up, grades are checked).
  • Have and maintain a satisfactory disciplinary record.
  • Attend the group and individual interviews (may be recorded).
  • Be able to pass the three required background checks at time of hiring.

 Resident Assistant Benefits

  • Resident Assistants are paid a stipend equivalent to the cost of housing and a meal plan:
  • The Fall 2020/Spring 2021 RA stipend is approximately $10,000.00 for the academic year.
  • Paid is received bi-weekly.
  • Pay is taxed.
  • Live in a single room at the double room rate:
  • RAs are billed for a room and meal plan before the start of the semester like all other students.
  • RAs are billed for a traditional double room regardless of residence hall placement.
  • Receive hands-on professional experience to boost their resumes.
  • Participate in extensive leadership training.
  • Qualify for an upper-class student parking pass regardless of earned credits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of things can I do to get hired? What kind of things are you looking for?

We are looking for applicants to be themselves and be involved on campus. All students are encouraged to go to residence hall programs and campus events.

 I already have another job on/off campus. Can I keep it?

No. RAs in their first semester of the position may not hold another job. After the first semester, RAs may work elsewhere up to 10 hours per week with supervisor approval.

 I want to work in a specific residence hall. How can I request that?

Applicants cannot request to work in a specific residence hall. RAs are placed in the residence hall with which they would have the most success. 

How much of a time commitment is the RA position?

Routinely, RAs have a certain set of hours during the week for staff meetings, being on duty, and individual meetings with their supervisors. However, much of the RA position is spent independently. RAs work on various tasks each week such as programming, floor meetings, and door decorations while also being present and available to their residents. As such, it is an expectation the RA position be made a priority, second only to academics.

Do RAs have to stay over breaks?

No. The Break RA position is separate from the semester RA position.
