High school STEM students visit Lock Haven University

Last month, freshmen Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students from Our Lady of Lourdes Regional School, Coal Township, visited Lock Haven University to spend time in the Health Science Department and learn about the various majors and careers in the health field. The students were part of the biomedical science program at Our Lady of Lourdes. They were accompanied by their teacher, Amy Feese, and the visit was coordinated by Dr. Rick Schulze, health science professor at LHU.

During their visit, the students met with Dr. Donna Wilson, provost and executive vice president at LHU, and went on a tour of both the campus and the anatomy cadaver lab. The students learned about the pre-physician assistant, pre-physical therapy, and pre-professional programs within the department; met with LHU students majoring in community and public health education; and learned how they collaborate with the community on projects dealing with suicide and opioid prevention, HIV/AIDS, and other youth issues.

Dr. Stephen Streator, associate health science professor at LHU, provided a lesson on the movement of muscles in the LHU anatomy lab. Dr. Jackie Whitling Dumm, LHU chemistry professor, demonstrated basic chemistry experiments that the students may experience in their labs. She also discussed the majors in chemistry and pre-med.

Dr. Kyle Root, LHU assistant professor in chemistry, discussed LHU students’ involvement with community projects and LHU senior chemistry, physics, and nanoscience majors discussed why they chose to attend LHU. They talked to the high school students about the relationships they have with their professors, the ability to conduct research with those professors and other students, the advantage of small class sizes and a hands-on approach to equipment in the labs, and the opportunities that are provided to them through LHU for summer research.
