Philip LaVelle is an award-winning Cincinnati based multi-medium artist who graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BFA in painting and Departmental Honors in Art History with a focus in Contemporary Theory from Ohio University. In the past few years he has been working on a series of pieces that use the language of painting, photography, and commercial design to explore ideas of our contemporary “landscape” that exists both in the “real” and the “virtual.”
Lavelle explores the displacement inherent in real and virtual experiences, “using painting, a nonlinear yet simultaneously experienced medium to create an abstract interpretation of our contemporary landscape or a more appropriately termed visual-scape. Like memories of the real infused with the virtual, personal and found digital images are laid into the work, either being fragmented or covered entirely. As the work builds, nonsensical structures begin to form giving multiple perspectives that exist both frozen and in flux.”
