Dr. Kathleen Allison, professor of Community and Public Health Education in the Lock Haven University Department of Health Science, authored a chapter in the text, “Cultural Competence in Health Education and Health Promotion.” The Jossey-Bass text, edited by Raffy Luquis and Miguel Perez, examines the intersection of culture and health and the importance of cultural competence for health promotion practice.
Allison’s chapter, “Planning, Implementing, and Evaluating Culturally Appropriate Programs,” explores strategies to effectively address health concerns of differing populations.
“Culture provides context for all health behaviors,” Allison said. “Each of us belongs to multiple cultures e.g., our ethnic cultures, religious cultures and even geographic cultures. As health practitioners, it is essential that we engage in programming and health care practice that reflect the values and concerns of the people we work with.”
Allison has been in teaching in the Heath Science Department at LHU since 2002. The department prepares students to work in a number of health professions, including public health, physician assistant, and athletic training.
