Scholarships for Returning Students - General Information

The Lock Haven University Foundation Scholarship Program is held during the spring semester providing recognition and financial assistance to students who are selected using a range of criteria. 

Scholarships, linked to the left, are divided by college, athletics, international, and general (any major).  Please carefully review the criteria and only apply for scholarships in which you meet the criteria.  The name of the scholarship is hyper-linked to the scholarship application.  You may submit multiple applications or combine on one application (if the application has both scholarships listed). To apply for scholarships in different categories (by major, or general, or athletic) you will be required to complete different applications.  

Once you submit your application you will receive an email verifying that the submission was successful.  In the event additional information is required (recommendation letters, proof of employment, etc.) you may upload with your application or email to Stacey Masorti at sjm1038@lockhaven.edu

Remember, if you receive a scholarship you will be notified by April 1, 2017 and you will be required to attend Spring Convocation (unless prior approval is granted to miss the convocation).  All scholarship recipients must also write a Thank You Letter to the donor in order to have the scholarship applied.

STUDENT APPLICANTS, all scholarship applications must be completed online. 

Program Procedures:

  • Friday, February 10, 2017 Application Deadline … No exceptions!
  • Foundation awards and scholarships are presented at the Spring Convocation on April 30 at 2:00 pm in Price Auditorium.
  • Students MUST attend LHU for the 2017/2018 academic year to receive the scholarship. 
  • Recipients must attend the Convocation ceremony and write a letter of thanks to the donor in order to receive awards. The attendance requirement may be waived only if acceptable excuses are received by the Enrollment Management Office no later than Friday, April 28. 
  • Amounts of Awards are an approximation of what is likely to be available. 
  • Some awards may be divided among multiple recipients. 
  • Monetary awards will be applied to fall 2017 semester through the Financial Aid Office. Awards of $1000 or more will be split between the fall 2017 and spring 2018 semesters.

For a rising senior accounting major with the highest average among accounting majors. Recipient shall have completed accounting course work at LHU.

For a student majoring in the Department of Business and Computer Science. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and have earned at least 30 credit hours. Student must have at least one remaining semester at LHU and submit to the scholarship committee a current resume and a short cover letter describing their career goals.

For a rising junior majoring in Computer Science with a strong background in mathematics who is a resident of Pennsylvania.  Minimum GPA of 3.0.

For a rising senior female Computer Science major with a minimum GPA of 2.5 with demonstrated financial need/active community service.  May receive award only once.

A one-year scholarship to an Applied Computer Science/Computer Information Science major who has completed Comp 300 Data Structures at LHU.  Minimum GPA of 3.0.

For rising sophomores, juniors or seniors majoring in Economics or Political Science with preference given to an Economics major; based on academic achievement/demonstration of financial need.

For students majoring in Management.  Must have achieved junior standing, with a minimum of 3.0 semester hours residence credit in major courses at LHU.

To provide a scholarship to a student employed by Stevenson Library. The recipient shall be a student determined to be the "most deserving" by the Stevenson Library Scholarship Committee, and shall demonstrate financial need.

For a rising Junior Recreation major with a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Recipient should be involved in community service and show a strong willingness to help others.

Dr. Matthew G. Maetozo Recreation Scholarship for Academic Excellence

For a male or female student majoring in Recreation. Must have successfully completed the Professional Semester or be presently enrolled in it and must have achieved a GPA of 3.2 or better in the Recreation major and a GPA of 3.0 or better overall.

For a rising junior Social Work major with a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Recipient should be an active participant and volunteer in campus community organizations.

Dolores Lynch Scholarship

For a Social Work major with at least 64 credits and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75. Must have at least a 3.25 GPA in the courses of the social work sequence. Not based on Financial need, but on merit and good academic standing within the social work major. Applicant must write a 350 word essay on why they decided to become a social worker.

Hari Prasanna Biswas Scholarship

For a senior Social Work or Sociology major with a minimum GPA of 3.6 in major and 3.5 overall GPA. A plaque will be awarded to recipient.

For three students majoring in Communication Media or majoring in the Journalism, Electronic Media, or Advertising and Public Relations track within the Communication Program.  One scholarship for a rising sophomore, one for a rising junior, and one for a rising senior.  Must excel in the field of Journalism and Mass Communication.  Must demonstrate financial need and have a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Special consideration will be given to Lock Haven Area School District graduates.  Disbursed among the three recipients equally.

Margaret Ann Brown Memorial Scholarship

For Communication Media or Communication majors who successfully complete at least 72 but not more than 104 credit hours at the end of the most recent fall semester; successfully complete 12 credit hours of LHU COMM, JOUR, or MCOM courses by the end of the most recent fall semester; attain the highest GPA at the end of the most recent fall semester of any declared Communication Media or Communication major who meets the criteria listed above.  Must be enrolled as a full-time student for the spring semester when the scholarship is awarded.

Rebecca Gross Journalism Award

For an outstanding senior majoring in Communication Media or majoring in Communication who are completing the Journalism Track, the Electronic Media Track, or the Advertising & Public Relations Track. Scholarship 1: To provide a scholarship to a rising junior or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0, U.S. Citizen with financial need in the education major with preference given to one who demonstrates an interest in education-safety, audio visual services or drivers education. Scholarship 2: To provide a scholarship to a rising junior or senior student who is a U.S. Citizen with financial need seeking a Bachelor of Science in Education with a specialty in English.

Thomas C. Hoy Memorial Scholarship

For a rising sophomore, junior or senior Secondary Education Science major with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Preference given to Keystone Central School District graduate who has documented financial need.

Thomas E. Wolfe Memorial Scholarship

For students majoring in Secondary Education, Social Science who have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the major courses, completed 45 to 85 credit hours, and have taken at least two major courses at LHU. Recipients may be considered for this award a second time provided eligibility requirements are maintained. During any single year, no student will be permitted to receive both this and the Nelson E. Wolfe Scholarship.

For two rising sophomore, junior or seniors minoring in Women and Gender Studies.  Must show evidence of leadership/engagement in women and gender issues on the campus or in the community and must discuss this evidence in a scholarship essay of at least 100 words.  Minimum GPA of 2.7 or higher throughout whole year after receipt of scholarship.  Selected by WGS Scholarship Committee ($250 each). Graduating seniors not eligible.

For Pennsylvania residents who are rising juniors or seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5 participating in at least one of the University music programs and demonstrating talent and interest in music. Must demonstrate financial need.

The Miriam Herr Claster Award

For students exhibiting exceptional musical talent. First priority to music majors with secondary considerations given to persons in PreK-Grade 4 or 4-8 Middle Level majors music emphasis program.

For a senior majoring in Geology from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. If this criteria is not met, the student should be a senior majoring in the Geology from Central, PA (Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry Counties.) If this criteria is not met, the student should be a senior majoring in the Natural Sciences from Central PA. If this criteria is not met, the student should be majoring in natural sciences.

Victoria J. Romeo, MD Memorial Physician Assistant Scholarship

In 2008 Lock Haven University Foundation became the benefactors of a trust that has endowed scholarship opportunities to graduate physician assistant students and LHUP undergraduate 3+2 BS/MHS students. This endowed scholarship fund will provide the following scholarships to future physician assistants enrolled in the LHUP programs:
·         Three $1070.00 Scholarships to students enrolled in the graduate Physician Assistant Program
·         Two  $1070.00 Scholarships to students enrolled in the undergraduate 3 + 2 BS/MHS Program
These scholarships will be competitively awarded on an annual basis. Students who receive the award in previous years are eligible to compete in subsequent years for the award. The following criteria will be used for determining award recipients:
·         Students must be residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to be eligible for the award
·         Students applying in their freshman through junior years in the 3 + 2 Program or graduate PA students must have a minimum 3.2 GPA.
·         Awards will be preferentially given to students who are from medically underserved areas.
·         Financial need, as determined by the student FAFSA application, will be considered in determining award eligibility.
·         Academic Performance as demonstrated by the applicant's last 24 months of education in any setting and standardized test scores will be considered.

For a full-time African-American student, who has achieved at least sophomore status, with a minimum GPA of 2.5 and demonstrated financial need.  First preference to be given to graduate of Harrisburg High School, second to York High School.

For a deserving student who demonstrates leadership in service to his/her community.  Must submit a short essay showing reasons why they qualify for the scholarship.

For an LHU junior or senior in good academic standing, majoring in History, with demonstrated financial need and an active participant in ROTC.

For an academically qualified student who has had a positive impact on the LHU campus and the lives of students.  Minimum GPA of 3.0 and must have completed 64 semester hours and participated in one or more student activities such as athletics, student government or performing arts.

For a rising junior or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.2 who demonstrates outstanding leadership skills, loyalty to LHU and great character. Preference given in a 3 year cycle starting with the first year preference given to recipient majoring in one of the College of Education disciplines. Second year recipient should be majoring in one of the Liberal Arts disciplines. Third year recipient should be majoring in one of the Natural Science disciplines.

For a female student in her sophomore or junior year. Must have accumulated 32 credits, have at least one more year remaining at LHU and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. For a full-time female student carrying a minimum of 12 credits, who entered college at least one year after high school graduation. For a Keystone Central School District graduate attaining sophomore status. Recipient must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Financial need is considered.

Captain Andrew Koss LHU ROTC Memorial Scholarship

To provide a scholarship for an LHU ROTC cadet. Army Physical Fitness Score of 250 or higher. GPA of 2.5 or higher. Military Science 1 (freshman year) entering Military Science 2 (sophomore year). Must be enrolled and participating in ROTC as a full time student as defined by LHU. Scholarship will be broken into equal parts and awarded at the start of each semester to ensure the awards criteria is being maintained. Selection to be made by the current LHU ROTC cadre.
