Student says LHU Emergency Student Fund changed her life

“One thousand dollars completely changed my life.”

That is what first-generation college student Melissa McEvoy wants people to know about the Lock Haven University Emergency Student Fund.

Melissa, a junior at LHU, was enjoying a seemingly-perfect spring semester at The Haven. The 25-year-old was working her way through school as a waitress while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in recreation management, a program she describes as “one of the best on the East Coast.”

Her professors were great. She enjoyed the beauty and nature of Lock Haven and the surrounding area. Most importantly, she loved that the small campus and friendly community made her feel like part of The Haven Family.

But then COVID-19 changed everything.

Transitioning to online learning was difficult for an independent student like Melissa, but it was lost wages after being laid off that put her LHU education in jeopardy. With no income, she was unable to register for a summer course that was a prerequisite for additional classes she would need in the fall. Without them, she would not be able to graduate on time.

The LHU Emergency Student Fund helped.

Melissa was granted $1,000 from the fund which enabled her to register for her required summer course. She will now be able to graduate on time and she can continue working toward becoming the first person in her family to earn a college degree.

The LHU Emergency Student Fund was established to address students’ immediate and greatest needs related to lost wages, housing issues, food insecurity and other financial obstacles stemming from COVID-19.

Melissa’s story is just one example of the LHU Emergency Student Fund’s life-changing impact on Lock Haven University students. Many LHU students come from low- to moderate-income households. These students need assistance now more than ever.
