As part of the Applied Community and Public Health curriculum, LHU Health Science students participate in a high impact learning activity where members of the community review and critique student professional portfolios. The community professionals represent several different community organizations, including the Lycoming County Health Improvement Coalition, the River Valley YMCA, Williamsport Area School District, and the West Branch Drug and Alcohol Commission.
The professionals usually spend approximately three hours reviewing and providing meaningful insight on the student’s portfolios. The professionals also provide valuable support to students with job readiness skills. They participate in speed interviews and provide debriefing sessions with students at the end of the session. “It is very clear students are passionate about their field and truly care about making a positive impact in the community which is the most critical quality a professional can possess,” says Tim Mahoney, President of the Lycoming County Improvement Coalition.
“The evidence found in the portfolios are powerful testimony of the quality of the education LHU students get in the Health Science/Community & Public Health area,” shares Stephanie Pardoe, Williamsport Area School District
“The program combines an intentional focus on network development along with enhanced awareness of the competencies acquired from high impact academic and clinical experiences. Connecting students with community leaders can help students think about and articulate how the skills they gained through experiential learning opportunities can be applied to their life beyond college,” says MaryJo Campana, Director of Career and Professional Development.
