The Communication Department and the Center for Career and Professional Development at Lock Haven University recently hosted Fred Coon, employment expert and best-selling author, on October 24 in the Parsons Union Building.
Coon, chairman and CEO of Stewart, Cooper & Coon, an international human capital management strategies firm, also is a multi-published author with two best-selling books. He recently released his third book for hiring authorities on successfully conducting behavioral interviews to help corporations hire the “right” fit. He also is a licensed employment agent, a nationally certified job and career transition coach, a behavioral consultant, and a certified disc administrator.
Coon conducted an interactive workshop earlier in the day for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education’s (PASSHE) career development staff and later that evening, presented a hands-on tactics session for LHU students and the university community.
Coon’s goal is to enable faculty and staff to improve student success in the job market. Over the past two years, he has devoted his time to teaching several online classes on how to build brand and value. His hands-on methods have been met with great feedback from staff and students alike.
During the presentation Coon took time to interact with some students and focus on their value. He asked them what they did at their jobs. Some students explained their job tasks as something very simple, but Coon emphasized on how it’s much more. “Everything you do has value,” he said. “Show me every side of you like a Rubik’s cube.”
He explained to the students that even though they might think they are doing something small, it will still make an impact in life and has helped to make them who they are today. “You are a product and you have value, how you sell yourself will impact your career goals,” he added.
