Lock Haven University senior, Anthony Eck, recently presented his community based research to the Lycoming County Commissioners during a community board meeting on December 12 in Williamsport.
Eck, of Hanover Township, is a health science major with a concentration in community and public health and a minor in psychology. He conducted his research as part of an independent study, partnering with more than 45 health and human service agencies and organizations – the Lycoming County Health Improvement Coalition.
His research was conducted to understand the emerging health concerns within Lycoming County by reviewing 14 community health needs assessments and analyzing them. The emerging health concerns included mental health, substance abuse, lack of education, cancer, obesity, and heart disease. He then created a database with most of the services offered for each specific emerging health concern, Eck said.
“By conducting an independent study at Lock Haven University I have learned a great deal about public health, health and human services, as well as their ability to positively impact the community,” Eck said. “I learned how to effectively interact with professionals in the field. Above all, this experience has reconfirmed my interest in public health and provided me a network of professionals I can rely on in my future career.”
Eck, who will graduate during the winter commencement ceremony on Saturday, December 16, has a career goal of working in the public health field.
