LHU Counseling Program Ranked Among Top Online Graduate Degrees

Lock Haven University’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program was recently ranked by the SR Education Group, an education research publisher founded in 2004, as the 8th best Online Counseling Degree in 2017.

Over 57,000 student reviews and ratings of over 1,600 colleges were analyzed in order to highlight the best graduate schools according to students. Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program Director Dr. Kristin Vincenzes said, “The fact that this ranking is based on student feedback is an honor and reinforces that the students at Lock Haven University have not only received a quality education to help them be successful in the mental health field, but they’ve enjoyed the journey along the way.”

The 2017 rankings represent 245 top graduate school across the nation and are based completely on student feedback. Sung Rhee, CEO of SR Education Group said, "With our rankings, we want to provide something more valuable than just a list of the most prestigious colleges, so we've compiled thousands of students' real experiences into accessible online resources available to anyone considering graduate school."

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at LHU began in fall 2012 and recently received an eight-year accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and related Educational Programs. Since their first graduating cohort in May 2015, 35 students have graduated with another 16 preparing to graduate in May. According to Vincenzes, “In the past year, 19 of the graduates had jobs lined up immediately following graduation or within three months after graduating.”

LHU’s CACREP accredited CMHC Program is designed to accommodate and meet the diverse needs of students across the country and fulfill the educational requirements for many state licensure boards.

The CMHC Program has a cohort model to accommodate both full time and part-time students. “By using virtual classrooms, we are able to provide that connection and community between our students and faculty while also offering the flexibility of online learning for those who would not otherwise be able to attend graduate school. Through the use of synchronous and asynchronous modalities, the CMHC program promotes students’ educational, professional, and personal development by supporting their overall wellness and encouraging a lifelong journey of professional learning and self-reflection,” said Vincenzes.

Upon completing the 60 credit Master of Science Degree, students will meet the educational requirements for a Licensed Professional Counselor in Pennsylvania. LHU also offers the National Counselor Examination which students can take during their internship. After completing the program and passing this exam, students will fulfill the second requirement for licensure, as well as meet the requirements to be a National Certified Counselor. The program also offers unique specializations in children and adolescent counseling as well as counseling military veterans and their families. For anyone interested in applying for the fall 2017 cohort, the application deadline is April 1.
