Lock Haven University Health Science and Pre-PA student Cassandra Fiorino of Willow Grove, PA, was recently accepted to participate in the Weill Cornell Medical College Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program based in New York City, NY. This prestigious fellowship will afford Fiorino exciting learning opportunities in medical research and clinical experience.
During the program, through the experiences of laboratory or clinical research, students learn how to pursue a specific research problem under the supervision of a faculty member, thus providing an early education into basic research techniques that could be applicable to any area of medicine. The students attend a series of talks by minority physicians about various medical specialties, addressing issues of concern in these physician's daily work plus views of the bigger picture in health care to minority communities. Shadowing physicians provide further exposure to the clinical facets of medicine.
Professor Ted Nuttall, Fiorino’s pre-med advisor says, “Cassandra’s acceptance into the program validates her superior academic work at LHU and her commitment to a career as a medical practitioner. This research fellowship will significantly strengthen her upcoming application to medical school, and her participation enhances the reputation of LHU’s strong premedical program. No one is more deserving of participating in this prestigious medical program than Cassandra.”
The program, which will run from June 19, 2017 to August 4, 2017, is designed to give 25 premedical students deeper insights into the field of medicine, including issues that greatly affect the health of traditionally underserved groups.
Fiorino is honored to have been chosen to participate. She says "The opportunity to take part in this research program will be a vital part of my future graduate school applications and an enriching academic experience. I am grateful for the support of my recommenders Dr. Nuttall and Dr. Brent May, as well as the rest of the Lock Haven community. Without them, my success would not have been possible."
