Dr. Paul Obenreder, a professor at Lock Haven University, was honored on Sept. 25 with a Patriot Award in recognition of extraordinary support of its employees and students serving in the Pennsylvania Guard and Reserve.
The award is given by Pennsylvania Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense office.
“The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publicly recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees and students, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve,” according to William Burkhard ESGR Pennsylvania North Central Area Chair, ”
Specialist Keegan Frey of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard nominated Dr. Obenreder for the Patriot Award for being highly supportive of his PA National Guard career.
In his nomination narrative, SPC Frey stated that “Dr. Obenreder took time out of his day to teach me one-on-one the materials that I was going to miss to make sure I succeed. He taught me during his office hours and his lunch breaks and even going so far as offering out of hours times to help me. He specifically caught my attention by being so supportive and understanding the military and my obligation.”
ESGR, a Department of Defense office, seeks to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DoD. Paramount to ESGR\’s mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
